Ecology

Ecology was always the science of plants and animals in relation to their environment but the term has been widened in recent years to encompass all the natural sciences. It is regularly sub-divided according to the species of interest into fields such as animal ecology, plant ecology, insect ecology, and so on.

We are concerned with landscape and plant ecology. Landscape ecology examines processes and relationship across ecosystems and our specific territory is the East end of Long Island where Suffolk County is at the forefront in local programs. For instance, they are increasing oxygen levels by reducing nitrogen input by controlling the quality of ground water. We can contribute to this program by selective planting. Plants and photosynthetic microorganisms convert light into chemical energy by the process of photosynthesis, which creates glucose (a simple sugar) and releases free oxygen.
